Are you an experienced governance professional looking to put your skills to work for a cause that matters?

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Australian Veterinary Environmental Alliance (AVEA) — formerly known as Vets for Climate Action — is seeking a volunteer Company Secretary to support our Board as we enter an exciting new chapter for the veterinary profession and the planet.

About Us

AVEA is an Australian registered charity mobilising the veterinary profession to take action on climate change. Through programs like the Climate Care Program, ZerOctober, Sustainable Equine Futures, and the World Veterinary Environmental Alliance (WVEA), we connect veterinary professionals to meaningful climate action — for animals, people and the planet. We're a small, passionate team guided by a committed Board, and our governance is at the heart of everything we do.

The Role

Working closely with our Board Chair, you will ensure AVEA operates with integrity, transparency and in accordance with its legal and regulatory obligations. You'll coordinate Board and Committee meetings, manage ACNC and ASIC compliance, maintain corporate records, and act as a key liaison between the Chair and Board on all governance matters.

This is a volunteer role requiring approximately 4–5 hours per week, including attendance at around 6–8 Board meetings per year. You won't be starting from scratch — we have existing policies, procedures, templates and resources to support you.

About You

You'll bring experience as a Company Secretary, board director, or senior governance professional, ideally in the not-for-profit sector, with a strong understanding of the Corporations Act and ACNC obligations. Above all, you share our passion for climate action and the belief that the veterinary profession has a vital role to play in building a better future for animals, people and the planet.

Why Join Us?

  • Contribute your expertise to a purposeful mission at a pivotal moment
  • Work with a warm, collaborative and skilled Board
  • Be part of an organisation making a genuine difference in Australia and globally
  • Flexible, remote-friendly commitment

To apply, please send your cover letter and resume to Board Chair Dr Catherine Harper: [email protected]

AVEA is committed to diversity and inclusion. We warmly welcome applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other diverse groups.
