Impact of weather events on veterinarians

Vets for Climate Action's Drs Jeannet Kessels and Helen Scott-Orr recently spoke with The Guardian about the impact of Australia’s worsening natural disasters on the profession. "Vets carry on, even while their own clinics are under water" acknowledged Dr Kessels.
Recognising that rural vets bear the brunt, unnatural weather events are adding pressure to an already stretched profession, they are also having massive economic, animal and vet welfare effects. Dr Scott-Orr highlighted the major animal health issues – infections, disease and insect-borne illnesses – that flourish in extreme weather, and recognised that euthanising animals amid large-scale natural disasters is “heartbreaking”.
This highlights why Vets for Climate Action continues to advocate for strong policies and action on the changing climate, particularly during our Veterinary Voices to Parliament event in Canberra earlier this year. You can read more here
