Environmental Sustainability in Veterinary Practice: Showcasing Research Among Veterinarians, Pet Owners & Industry Professionals

In this masterclass, Tanya Michelsen presents key findings from recent research involving veterinarians, pet owners, and animal health industry professionals — exploring how sustainability and the climate crisis are shaping attitudes, behaviours, and decision-making across the veterinary sector.
Drawing on robust data and real-world insights, the session unpacks where the profession currently stands, and where it hopes to go, in building a more sustainable future for animals, people, and the planet.
Attitudes and awareness How seriously is the profession taking sustainability? Tanya examines prevailing attitudes toward climate change among veterinary professionals and pet owners — including levels of concern and urgency, and where perspectives align or diverge across stakeholders.
Engagement and action From clinic practices to household habits, this section explores what sustainable actions are already being taken, the gap between intention and action, and the barriers — cost, time, knowledge, and systemic constraints — that get in the way.
Unmet needs and opportunities What do people want to do, but can't? Tanya identifies opportunities for better systems, practical sustainability initiatives, and greater alignment between values and everyday decision-making.
Sustainability and decision-making How do environmental considerations influence purchasing, professional recommendations, and business operations? This section explores where sustainability intersects with animal welfare, client expectations, and commercial realities.
Responsibility and leadership Who is best placed to drive change? Tanya unpacks where people believe responsibility lies — across individual practitioners, industry players, professional bodies, and government — and where leadership is emerging and collaboration is needed.
The future of the profession The masterclass closes by looking ahead: what does a truly sustainable veterinary profession look like? How can the sector balance high-quality animal care with environmental responsibility and meaningful social impact?
Attendees will leave with a clearer picture of the landscape, the challenges ahead, and the role the veterinary sector can play in contributing to a more sustainable future.
