The 'preliminary launch' of the Climate Care Program commenced in May 2022 with over 20 clinics from across Australia – ranging from small general practices to specialist referral and emergency hospitals. Here's what Climate Champions participating in the preliminary launch are saying about their involvement in the program so far...

I'm learning about climate change, and how our practice can be more climate friendly. It feels like I've been given the power to make a difference."

So far (I'm) feeling inspired that this may really help change some protocols within the practice."

I've enjoyed seeing how the veterinary world fits into climate change, and the impacts worsening climate change will have on our (veterinary) day to day lives."

As an industry, we are very wasteful. A lot of this is unavoidable as we need to use a lot of single use plastics for medical purposes. The excessive amounts of waste we produce on any given day can be quite distressing. To be able to reduce our carbon footprint with thoughtful and sustainable practice in meaningful ways is important for the ethos of our business structure and for me personally. There are many big and small changes we can make to be more environmentally friendly."

[It's] Informative. It allows information gathering in a way that is easier. Much of the overwhelm of where to start comes from trying to gather the right information to make informed choices and changes. This program does this for you."

I was surprised to find I already had some team members who are passionate about climate change."

I believe the effects of climate change can be mitigated by all of us making even just small changes in our day to day lives, and what better place to start than our workplaces? In team environments, we can collaborate, share ideas, and find solutions together. Working within the animal care and veterinary industry, environmental sustainability isn't a long stretch from our already thriving care to protect those without a voice."

I'm so glad that I've signed up to be part of this program, and grateful that my new boss... has encouraged our involvement."

I recognise (daily) that there are many things in the clinic that we can improve on to reduce our environmental footprint. With the standard busy schedule of every Australian vet at the moment, I can't find the time to find practical ways to make a difference. Similarly, finding time to discuss this with the staff in the clinic to empower change is difficult. I am hoping that with a framework and support, I will be able to feel more confident in recommending effective changes to implement."

I am hoping to make our practice more sustainable and reduce its impact on the environment. I am also hoping that by being more environmentally aware, our clients will recognise and applaud this, and that it will also inspire our clients to take more environmentally aware steps in their own lives, as it really will be a global effort that is needed."
